The British can seem to carry some sense of sophistication about them. Maybe its the accent, maybe its their history and heritage. Honestly, it is most likely the prior, but the accents of the stewardess was just the cherry on top of the refreshing sundae of an airline.
As cheesy as that may have sounded, compared to the many airlines I have tried in the US, my experience on British Airways was miles ahead starting from when I first entered the aircraft. The first class, of course, looked amazing with full reclining seats that basically convert to a bed. The setup of the seats allows maximum foot room and also provides a privacy screen between you and your neighbor. In the Economy/Business class, you may not have all the room, but the free amenities are impressive. As they close the cabin doors, you are offered single servings of wine, red or white, in a bottle. For free! Each seat also comes with a 'Comfort pack' containing a toothbrush, eye-mask, and socks all yours to keep. Free once again!
Throughout the flight, the personal TVs offer hours of entertainment, mostly free that you can watch at any time. Dinner as well as breakfast are offered (as long as you are awake to claim them.) The food, though not the best quality, still passes for a substantial meal all at no cost. All the while they continue to offer you as many wine singles as you wish.
All the free food, drinks, and socks would be enough to elevate this airline far beyond what we experience from most local US carriers, even on trans-Atlantic flights. However, even while offering all this, BA was the cheapest flight across the pond I could find! It is crazy that Delta, US, United and the sort would charge us more money for less service, but I guess that is the pickle airlines in the US have been put in: They have to squeeze as much money out of the customer as possible, all while skimping on free amenities.
BA has done a wonderful job carving out their space in Europe, even among all the bargain airlines out there. They provide high quality service that many people may be willing to pay extra for, but most will not need to. Looks like those Brits are more than just a funny accent. Here's hoping some of this 'British luxury' will rub off on our airlines.
Til then, Cheers!
